“We’re energized by the opportunity to start our first official project as a company in our home state of Arizona,” Steve Backman, co-founder and partner of BH DevCo, the developer of the project, said in an email to the Business Journal. “The city of Surprise is perfectly positioned for this new industrial build, and we anticipate even more market demand regionally as we see the rise of e-commerce continue and the increasing need for brands to optimize their shipping and distribution services.”

The project will include a 145,491-square-foot standalone package delivery facility, which will be used for sorting packages to be delivered into local neighborhoods, according to city documents, which did not refer to Amazon by name, instead calling the development “Project Baxter.”

“We are excited to increase our investment in Surprise with a new delivery station to provide fast and efficient delivery for customers, and provide hundreds of job opportunities for the talented local workforce,” Lisa Guinn, an Amazon spokeswoman said.

The delivery station is expected to open in 2021.

“Amazon has selected an ideal location in the city of Surprise offering access to a talented workforce, transportation infrastructure and a growing residential market, and we are excited to welcome them,” Surprise Mayor Skip Hall said in an emailed statement. “We’re looking forward to supporting their local job growth and success at this new Amazon location serving the northwest greater Phoenix market.”

Amazon.com Inc. has been active in the West Valley in recent weeks. The e-commerce giant closed on 92 acres of vacant land in Goodyear, where the company plans to build a 650,000-square-foot industrial facility, according to brokers from Lee & Associates who represented the seller in that deal.

Amazon announced a new delivery station in Goodyear in July 2019, which opened last year. At the time, it was the fifth delivery station for the company in Arizona.

The developer of the new location in Surprise, BH DevCo, which is based in Arizona, is separately developing another Amazon facility in New Mexico.
